FIELD RECORDINGS
(original broadcast date: Nov. 19, 2004)

- - - -

Stricly speaking, a "field recording" is defined as any recording made outside of the studio, so it should come as little surprise that they often feature sounds from the outside world. Charles Seeger (father of Pete) and John Lomax (father of Alan) are widely regarded as the grandfathers of the field recording. These early ethnomusicologists set out to document American folk music during the early 20th century, and wound up recording other sounds from the culture which produced that music as well. - Epitonic

Acetates (also known as Recordio-discs) were the technological breakthrough for home recording in 1949... Rumor has it that these recordings were made by the original founder of Soleilmoon recordings, Seymour Crouchly, and were discovered by his grandson Johnny Pinkhouse. - Epitonic

7. "Dodgy" by Kid 606
8. "19 Smoketree Lane" by Boxharp

While comparisons to so-called "glitch" artists may be inevitable, one of Kit Clayton's most unique qualities is his knack for making beats that ably straddle the worlds of techno and experimental. - Epitonic
